Car heists are fun only on the silver screen, not in real life. Like in the movie 'Gone in 60 Seconds' it isn't quite as easy to nip Mercs and BMWs and other such high-end cars because of their in-built security features. For other not so pricey cars, after-market security systems have often saved the day.

But market leader Maruti is now ready to offer high-tech, factory fit engine immobilisers to make sure that the one car stolen every six minutes in India, is not a Maruti. Managing Director, Maruti Udyog, Jagdish Khattar told CNBC-TV18, "We have this immobiliser, which is a chip fixed with the steering and engine, so, that there is a programme that connects the key with the chip."

Inside the key sits a transponder that works like a radio. It communicates the unique electronic identification to a similar chip sitting in the car, which then cross checks the code with the car's computer. If the codes don't match, the car won't start. Simple!

Now that you're car is safer you can expect your monthly insurance premiums to go down a bit too. Such devices would have been standard if the car insurance market had been freed up. Insurance premiums for theft-prone cars, like Maruti's, would have risen, compelling the car manufacturers to make them theft-proof, without any prodding from the government.
