Porsche has been known for creating some of the wildest yet subtle cars for decades. One of their best-known creations has been the 911 series and their latest range has made its way into India, with a starting price tag of Rs 1.43 Crore for the Carrera model and Rs 2.25 crore for the Turbo model (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi).
What’s new in this range is that the company has now opted for smaller cubic capacity engine and has hooked it up with a couple of turbochargers, which means that the car now has better emission standards, higher economy and a lot more power at the driver’s disposal. The biggest change on the exteriors is the new front fascia with four-point DRLs, redesigned rear lid with vertical louvres and four-point tail lamps. The main addition inside the car is that the range is now equipped with Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system, which features a multi-touch 7-inch display equipped with a range of function with intuitive controls similar to operating a smartphone.
The new 911 Carrera produces 370 horsepower and 450 Nm torque, while the 911 Carrera S produces 420 horsepower and 500 Nm torque, thanks to modified compressors, enhanced exhaust system and tuned engine management. In terms of speed the Carrera is two-tenths of a second faster in a sprint from 0 to 100 km/h than its predecessor at 4.2 seconds and the Carrera S, with PDK and Sport Chrono Package, does that sprint in 3.9 seconds. The Carrera S will also have an option of rear-axle steering which is taken from the 911 Turbo and 911 GT3.
If we talk about the Turbo model, then the 3.8-litre six-cylinder bi-turbo engine delivers a massive 540 horsepower making it do the 0-100 km/h sprint in 3 seconds and a top speed of 320 km/h. Just in case that’s not fast enough for you then there is a 911 Turbo S as well, which develops 580 horsepower and reaches 100 km/h from a standstill in a mere 2.9 seconds and goes all the way to 330 km/h. Phew.
The steering wheel on the 911 range has four modes – Normal, Sport, Sport+ and Individual, which will alter the car’s mechanics and gizmos as per the requirements of the driver.
As mind-blowing as these figures may be, the craziest part about the new 911 range is a button the steering wheel called the ‘Sport Response Button’ which, when pressed, pre-conditions the drivetrain to break all hell loose and offer maximum acceleration for 20 seconds. Porsche says it is a feature that can be deployed for overtaking manoeuvres, we say it is the button that should have been called ‘warp drive’.
