Hyderabad: Airport Metro Works To Begin As Joint Venture With Centre? Read On
Hyderabad Airport Metro Rail Limited (HAML) is finalizing the detailed project reports (DPRs) with the help of general consultant Systra.

After the Telangana government and the Centre form a joint venture (JV), construction of the new metro train route to the international airport in Shamshabad, on the outskirts of Hyderabad, is probably going to start shortly after.

According to The Hindu, Hyderabad Airport Metro Rail Limited (HAML) is completing detailed project reports (DPRs) for the extension of phases 1 and 2 with the assistance of general consultant Systra. As per HAML authorities, after the state government accepts the DPRs, they can be sent to the Centre for the necessary approvals.

Meanwhile, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has directed that the projected airport metro route through the Old City include an interchange station at Chandrayangutta.

Furthermore, the 5.5-kilometer MGBS-Falaknuma section (of the green line) in the Old City is scheduled to be extended by an additional 2 km. The planned 29-kilometer Nagole-Mailardevpally-P7 Road-international Airport corridor passes through Chandrayangutta.

In addition, the 67-kilometer project, which includes the phase 1 expansion and phase 2 construction, is expected to cost more than Rs 20,000 crore, with the Centre bearing 15 per cent, the state 35 per cent, and international financial institutions such as the Asian Development Bank or the Japan International Cooperation Agency bearing 45 per cent. The remaining 5 per cent will be obtained through a public-private partnership (PPP).

“We chose the JV mode because the PPP model for the entire project may not work under current circumstances. The JV is a safe model. It will not be much of a financial burden either on the Centre or on the State government because of the low interest rates by the international funding agencies when compared to indigenous financial institutions,” a senior official told The Hindu.

Although the DPRs will be sent to various ministries, such as the railway and highway departments, for approval, the HAML does not anticipate many significant barriers to clearance by the Centre.

Moreover, the senior official reportedly believes that the project will be moved forward on a “fast track” basis due to Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s support and a significant budget allocation for the works expected this year.

The other proposed metro rail routes include Miyapur-Chandanagar-BHEL-Patancheru (14 km), Raidurg to Financial District via biodiversity junction (12 km), LB Nagar-Vanasthalipuram-Hayathnagar (8 km) and Mailardevpally-Aramgarh-new High Court at Rajendranagar (4 km).
