Delhi Govt Cuts Traffic Challans for Certain Violations by 50%, But You'll Have to Pay By...
The traffic challan discount has been introduced to encourage timely payment of traffic fines. This initiative aims to prevent legal disputes and reduce the burden on courts and the transport department

In a relief to commuters flouting traffic rules, the Delhi government has announced a 50% discount on traffic challan fine.

However, the 50% discount is applicable only if commuters pay the fine within 90 days of notification of any existing challan or within 30 days of issuing of new challans after the new rule comes into force.

The Delhi government has already framed the new order and it is pending approval from the Lieutenant Governor. This discount will be applicable on crimes under specific sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.

According to a Times of India report, Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gehlot said that the government has decided to collect 50% of the challan amount for some traffic offenses under some sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.

The discount in payment of traffic challan has been introduced to ensure the convenience for people and to encourage them to pay traffic fines. This will also avoid long legal disputes and reduce the burden of courts and the transport department.

According to the new proposal, this discount will only be applicable for selected traffic violations. For instance, it will be applicable when a vehicle owner allows an unauthorized person or an ineligible person to drive the vehicle, if someone drives without a valid license, if someone drives dangerously, or if they are found unfit to drive.

According to media reports, this decision was taken because a large number of challans of both the traffic and transport departments were pending payment. Earlier this year, the Transport Department of the Delhi government had written a letter to the judiciary stating that a large number of people are not responding to these challans issued.

The department has also informed that more than 75% of the challans issued during the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) last year have not been paid. A transport department official said that the number of challans issued has increased significantly in 2023 as compared to 2022.
