VS Achuthanandan condemns Koshys remarks

Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan has condemned Human Rights Commission chairman Justice J B Koshy’s statement that people should handle those who call for and observe hartal.

He said in a statement here on Saturday that the remarks would prompt one to doubt that Justice Koshy had the wrong notion that ridiculing popular agitations would be protecting human rights. “A former Chief Justice, now holding an exalted position in the society, should not have asked the people to take law into their own hands,” he said.

The government is making all efforts to usurp the fundamental rights of the people by various anti-people policies. He said that the Human Rights Commission should clarify how to handle the government for its anti-people policies.

‘Total Breakdown of Law and Order’

Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan said that the law and order in the state was in a shambles under the UDF Government.

“The broad daylight murders and  burglaries have become the order of the day. The peaceful life of the people is under threat. The secretary of the Malabar chamber of Commerce, Nazeer Ahammad was killed under mysterious circumstances,’’ he pointed out.

In a statement here, he said the other day an aged woman at Kundara was brutally murdered after her gold ornaments were stolen.

In a house at Attingal, gold ornaments bought for wedding was stolen after thieves broke into the house. The laxity on the part of the police has paved the way for  thieves and criminals to have a free run. The police had totally failed in protecting the life and property of the public, he said.  Even the Human Rights Commission chairman has stated that 20 per cent of the policemen are corrupt. He alleged that UDF leaders were sharing the tainted money with the police.  He asked the government to take urgent steps to make the police force effective in maintaining law and order.
