How Manoj Kumar-Hema Malini’s 1976 Film Dus Numbri Impacted Their Careers
Dus Numbri was Hema Malini's 4th hit in a row in 1976.

Manoj Kumar and Hema Malini are two stalwarts of Indian cinema. They have contributed to the ever-evolving world of the cinema with their superhit films. The duo shared the screen space for 6 movies and every film became a stellar success with the audience. These films include Sanyasi (1975), Santosh (1989), and Dus Numbri (1976). Among these movies, Dus Numbri was Hema Malini’s 4th hit in a row in 1976. It was her 2nd consecutive blockbuster as well with Manoj Kumar after their film Sanyasi. As per the IMDB report, Manoj Kumar stopped acting in the films bankrolled by the other production houses post Dus Numbri. No reason is out in the public domain that why he took this decision. Premnath Malhotra, Pran Sikand, Bindu Desai, and others also acted in Dus Numbri, which was directed by Madan Mohla. The credit roll of the film mentioned Madan Mohla’s name as the director. As per the IMDB report, however, it was Manoj Kumar, not Madan Mohla, who handled the direction of the film.

Manoj had talked about Hema Malini in an interview with the Filmfare portal. He said, “She is closest to my family. She’d send us idlis and dosas. We’d send across kali dal. We did Sanyasi, Dus Numbri and Kranti together. Once during Kranti, I told her that I wanted to shoot her at the helipad at 5.10 am. I wanted to capture her in a sunrise mood, which marked the change in her character. I zoomed at the sun, she looked at it …shot over. She was very happy with the shot and sent across some idlis.”

Manoj Kumar has not acted in any major films since his last film Maidan-E-Jung released on April 14, 1995. Hema Malini has also been absent from the limelight for a long time now. In an exclusive interview with Zoom, the veteran actress said that she wants to make a comeback to the films. She, however, said that the role would have to be appropriate for her age. Her last released film remains Shimla Mirchi (2020), directed by Ramesh Sippy.
