HYDERABAD: In view of the huge scarcity of natural resources like coal and gas, the Union government has suggested to all states to fully gear up to implement energy conservation measures to bridge the gap between the demand and supply as it is a big challenge to the power utilities in next five years to meet the ever-increasing demand in various sectors like industry, business, transport, domestic and agriculture. The Union government is contemplating to lay special focus on energy efficiency and conservation of energy in the 12th five-year Plan, Ajay Mathur, director-general of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), has said.Inaugurating a nationallevel Energy Efficiency Summit- 2011 organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here on Friday, he hailed the lead taken by energy department of the Andhra Pradesh government in initiating energy conservation programmes in a big way by constituting a highlevel committee on the issue and hoped that the comprehensive report to be submitted to the state government would be a road map for improving energy efficiency and conservation of energy in the state.A.Chandrasekhara Reddy, member-secretary of Energy Co-ordination Cell of the energy department, said that the high-level committee on energy conservation would submit a comprehensive report by the end of September which would help in adoption of policies and procedures for promoting the energy conservation measures in industrial, domestic and agricultural sectors. In spite of substantial increase in the generation capacity, considerable reduction in transmission and distribution losses by the power utilities in the state, the demand-supply gap still persisted in view of the unprecedented growth in demand and depletion of natural resources which warranted Discoms to implement energy conservation measures in a big way, he said.Reddy said the second meeting of the Energy Conservation Committee of AP would be conducted in the first week of September at Visakhapatnam.
