Mumbai’s eagerly awaited Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), famously known as Atal Setu, is all set to debut this month, bringing with it a toll of Rs 250 for car commuters.

Having said that, the Maharashtra Cabinet has passed the decision wherein the toll proposal has been approved.

Initially, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority proposed a toll of Rs 500 per trip based on estimates from the Japan International Cooperation Agency. However, the Urban Development Department (UDD) has revised it to Rs 250 for cars, considering various factors, as reported by the Indian Express.

The proposed toll is set for 30 years, from 2024 to 2053. The initial five years will determine traffic flow and financial patterns, potentially leading to further adjustments in toll rates.

As per the Cabinet note, the toll rates will see a 6 percent annual increase. Besides cars, other vehicles will face varying toll charges: mini buses at Rs 560, bus/2-axle trucks at Rs 1,180, 3-axle trucks at Rs 1,290, 4-6 axle vehicles at Rs 1,850, and oversized vehicles at Rs 2,250.

The MTHL, costing Rs 17,843 crore and spanning 21.8 km, will link Sewri in Mumbai to Chirle in Navi Mumbai, boasting six lanes with a significant portion built over water. It’s anticipated to cut travel distance between South Mumbai and Chirle by about 30 km, reducing travel time from hours to just 16 minutes across the bridge.

The concept of a bridge connecting Mumbai’s Island City to the mainland was first proposed in 1962, aiming to enhance economic integration between Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and surrounding regions like Pune, Goa, Panvel, and Alibaug.
