Arup Varma is currently working as a professor at Loyola University in Chicago for the past 28 years.

Arup Varma, who is now a professor at Loyola University Chicago is from Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. His remarkable journey, filled with challenges, marks its beginning from his birth. Arup shared that when he was born, his mother was afraid of the fact if he would be able to walk properly or not as it took a long span for him to start walking.

Varma said that his childhood was spent with a lot of struggles as he spent most of his life in one room wherein his family had to share their bathroom with neighbours. Although he is from Prayagraj, Varma has spent most of his life in Kolkata as his father was appointed as a Hindi teacher in a private school.

As Arup was a good student, his mother always wanted him to study and get a better lead in life. He studied in the same school where his father used to work till his higher secondary. Following his schooling, Arup pursued a degree in BS Economics (Hons) from Kolkata in 1982. After that, he went to Xavier School of Management in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand for an MS in Personal Management and Industrial Relations.

Upon completion of his studies, Arup got a job in Ranbaxy located in Delhi. Following the first job, Arup worked in another company for three years. However, he always wanted to go abroad for further studies which led him to take admission for PhD in Industrial Relations and Human Resources at Rutgers University, America.

After the PhD, Arup joined Loyola University in Chicago. He has been working there for the past 28 years. According to the university’s official website, Arup Varma has published over 100 papers in several leading journals so far. He has researched in fields like performance appraisal and leader-member exchange, alternative dispute resolution, and expatriate issues.
