Telangana BJP to Lose Big Leader Before Lok Sabha Polls? Cong in Touch with Eatala Rajender, Say Sources

The Congress is preparing to deliver a shock to the BJP in Telangana by poaching one of its big names in the state ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in April-May. Senior leader Eatala Rajender is in touch with the grand old party, said sources.

According to party sources, the Congress is in touch with Rajender, who was the campaign committee chief for the BJP in the recently held assembly election in which the Congress registered a surprising victory in the state. Sources said the Congress is mulling over giving a ticket to Rajender from the Karimnagar Lok Sabha constituency, which is at present held by former state BJP president Bandi Sanjay Kumar.

Before he joined the BJP, Rajender held important portfolios like finance and health in the BRS government, which was in power in Telangana for 10 years.

After its confident win in the state during the assembly election, the Congress is now on a mission to secure big names for its Lok Sabha campaign. It recently inducted YS Sharmila and appointed her the Andhra Pradesh unit chief and former Odisha chief minister Giridhar Gamang.

Rajender, who contested from Huzurabad and Gajwel in the assembly polls, has denied the reports of him joining the Congress reportedly saying he has no intention of joining the party. He added that these rumours are propagated by the Congress or BJP insiders aiming for his exit. He further said he is planning to contest the upcoming elections from Malkajgiri.

In Gajwel, Rajender lost to former chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao by 45,031 votes.

The BJP is looking to make gains in Telangana for the Lok Sabha elections and has appointed Chandrashekhar, who is a key organisation leader in the party’s Rajasthan unit, as the general secretary (organisation) in the state. The saffron party had won four out of 17 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana in the 2019 polls and is now looking at a different set of challenges after the Congress recently surged to power in the state, defeating the ruling BRS.

The BJP is, however, hopeful of putting up a good show in the Lok Sabha elections. Union home minister Amit Shah, during a recent visit to the state, had set a target of winning 10 seats for the party.
